Simon Difford buys back Class Magazine

The British cocktail specialist Simon Difford has bought back the rights for Class Magazine, eight years after he sold the title to William Reed Publishing. In a newsletter he sent out today, he announced that he will restart the brand:

"(…) my company, Sauce Guides Limited, will from immediate effect be publishing CLASS Magazine thanks to an agreement to acquire the title’s intellectual property rights struck with William Reed Business Media today. Broadly speaking, I intend to pick up where we left off eight years ago, but with the benefit of age and a good deal more experience.

I will once again become CLASS Editor and Dan Malpass, one of the magazine’s original designers and the man behind the look of ‘diffordsguide’, will be the arbiter of all things aesthetic. Expect irreverent editorial, gorgeous photography and luxurious paper. Hannah Sharman-Cox will ensure our baby has the appropriate care and exposure to the glorious world of drinks."

Simon Difford had originally founded Class back in 1997. Under his guidance the publication did stimulate and to a large extent form the rise of the trade we refer to as "bar industry" today. The who-is-who of the British bar scene today got their names and image largely due to features and networking done by Class. As Simon told me once it was a failed investment into the internet that led to his sale in 2001.

William Reed Publishing never seemed to be happy with the format in the years that followed the purchase. They even licensed the title to Alchemy Media Solutions at some point. When I met Simon recently in London he had already hinted that negotiations for getting the brand Class back were underway. We at Mixology do now look forward to his first edition. We’re sure that, with all his extensive knowledge of the printing business, Simon will reinstate Class as a leading publication for the global bar buisness.
