Beer, Bars & Brewers #22
Happy Turkey Day for all of our American friends out there! We’re here for you while you hid out from your family, desperately seeking news from the outside world. This week Avery discontinues seven of its beers. And we find the 10 best Thanksgiving beer pairings (in case you want to head out and get one more case), Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine announce the winner in their first annual Best in Beer awards. Cheers to all!
This Berlin weekend is stuffed with all things wine (the RAW fair is in town) but if you’re more inclined to hops than grapes, Bierlieb has got you covered. The craft beer store/hobby brewer mekka on Danziger Straße is hosting its first annual Wet Hop Festival on Saturday, November 26th. They’ll be showcasing as many beers brewed with wet hops as possible. Come on down and taste your way through the variety, this is sure to be a raging success!
Avery Brewing Co. Discontinues Seven Beers
So get them while you still can! Last week Avery Brewing Co. announced that it would discontinue seven of its beers by year’s end. This decision was made to make room for its 2017 lineup. Those that will soon no longer be include the entire Demons of Ale series: The Beast and Mephistopheles—as well as The Kaiser, The Czar, Salvation and Dugana. Draft believes that the decision was made to increase the focus on Avery’s Annual Barrel Series, the Botanicals & Barrels series, and the Barrel-Aged Series’ one-offs. Avery’s co-founder and CEO Adam Avery said “These beers led the way for everything we do today to push the boundaries of our beer. Now we are taking all that courage, expertise, and quality control we gained and amplifying it in a much bigger way in our barrel program.” Not all is lost though, they might appear barrel-aged bottles or tap room rarities in the future.
10 Thanksgiving Beer Pairings
We might not celebrate good ol’ turkey day here in Europe, but we can certainly appreciate the beauty of stuffing. As does the online publication Craft Beer. Head on over to their site to see their complete list of Thanksgiving stuffing paired with craft beer. Our particular standouts are Sour Beer with California Sourdough Stuffing, the Pumpkin Ale with Pennsylvania Dutch Filling, and a Oyster Stout with East Coast Oyster Stuffing. Maybe we should rethink this whole Thanksgiving business after all?
Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine Best in Beer 2016: Readers’ Choice & Editors’ Picks
This year the first Beer & Brewing Magazine’s “Best in Beer” awards took place and the winners were just published. The magazine’s awards categories were chosen by their readers through an online survey. This year Bell’s Brewery’s Two Hearted IPA made it as the top beer of 2016, closely followed by Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale and Russian River’s Pliny the Elder IPA. The hilarious winning answer to “if you could only drink one beer or one brewery’s beer while stranded on a deserted island” was #1 “My Homebrew”. Doubt that’s a good idea but okay. They’ve got a bunch of lists, ranging from “best large brewery” to “favorite beer event”. Head on over to read it all here.
