Inventory for August 7th, 2016

Cheers to summer friends! This week we take a look at the new whiskey just launched by The Dubliner, Laphroaig’s expansion of its Cairdeas range, how the Smithsonian is set to hire a “beer historian” to work amongst its scientists and researchers, and Matthew McConaughey rise to creative director of Wild Turkey. Cheers!

August is usually a quiet month, which is nice. Things will be picking up soon enough (looking at you, Bar Convent Berlin – we’re a mere three months away!) but if you’re still up for some action in the last true summer month, don’t miss out on the Streetfood Court just by Berlin’s most famous Sunday market, the Flohmarkt am Mauerpark. Thirty caterers will be presenting their foods from all around the world. This month you can expect them there on the 14th, 21st and 28th of August. Don’t miss it!

Launch of The Dubliner Irish Whiskey

After the success of The Dubliner Irish Whiskey Liqueur, its makers have decided to produce The Dubliner Irish Whiskey, which is a blend of single malts and grain whiskies. The blend is aged in American bourbon barrels and is said to be warm and mild, with a lovely long finish. More information here.

Laphroaig Expands Cairdeas Range with Madeira Cask

The Spirits Business reports that “Islay Scotch whisky distillery Laphroaig has released the 2016 edition in its Cairdeas range, which has undergone a second period of maturation in traditional Madeira wine casks”. The distillery’s manager, John Campbell, creates a new edition for the Cairdeas range each in to honor the Friends of Laphroaig loyalty group, which is made up of over 6000,000 international members. He says “This year’s bottling is special because it’s so different from our previous releases. “The ageing of the liquid in Madeira casks makes 2016’s Cairdeas exceptionally flavourful and robust, while still maintaining Laphroaig’s characteristic peat and smoke. The result is a truly special whisky”.

Matthew McConaughey Named Wild Turkey’s Creative Director

Alright, alright, alriiiight … Sorry, had to. Now that we’ve got that out of our system: In a video announcing McConaughey’s new role he explains “that the brand first approached him a few years back, offering him the chance to become their celebrity brand ambassador”, but alas – that was not enough for good ol’ Wooderson. Liquor.com reports that “McConaughey brokered a deal to become the creative director and help tell the brand’s story through writing, directing and starring in its advertisements”. After all, back in college McConaughey interned (!) with a creative agency. Apparently, Wild Turkey does not require more credentials than that.

The Smithsonian Will Pay Someone $64,000 a Year to Drink (and Research) Beer

Dream job alert! The Smithsonian is hiring a beer historian for a position that is set to last three years and is funded by the Brewers Association. The Person needs to be “interested in research, documentation and collecting American brewing history”. American beer nerds must be screaming with delight right about now. Fortune on how this job came about: “The museum has long collected information on food history, and in the course of its research, staff members became curious about the origins of the craft beer movement”.

Whoever gets hired for the gig will work with staff members to develop collections on the craft beer movement. “The beer historian should also have ‘proven experience’ in research and oral history interviews, as well as writing for scholarly audiences. The applications process is open until August 10th – go, go, go!
