Introducing the MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS 2018 Winners

MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS 2018: Europe’s best bartender is Remy Savage! The man behind Paris’s Little Red Door took home Best European Mixologist in a highly competitive category. And that wasn’t the only big surprise.

In a sign that Europe’s great bars and bartenders come from all over the continent, Remy Savage from Paris cocktail den Little Red Door was named Best European Mixologist at the MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS tonight. Savage’s reputation for inventive drinks has earned him great respect in the French bar scene. After a victory like this, it’s no surprise Savage has been tapped to rejuvenate the bar program at London’s Artesian.

Another well-deserved win went to Dr. Stravinsky in Barcelona, which was awarded Best New European Bar, beating three London-based cocktail bars. And Best New European Spirit or Bar Product went to Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto, an Italian aperitif created by Giuseppe Gallo. The European scene has a lot to be proud of tonight.

London’s only European win was in the Best European Bar category, which went to the American Bar at the Savoy. The victory caps off a big week for the historic bar, which made it to the top of the World’s 50 Best Bars list on Thursday.

For the first time in the history of the MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS, a single bar swept three different categories. Freiburg’s One Trick Pony deserves its place in history, taking out both New Bar of the Year and Bar Menu of the Year in the GSA categories. The bar netted its third win with the Mixologist of the Year award going to bar manager Jan Jehli. Clearly, something big is happening in Germany’s small towns.

Staying with Germany, Hamburg’s Chug Club took home two awards. The first was Bar of the Year, Germany, and the second was a well-deserved Host of the Year award for owner Bettina Kupsa. Meanwhile, Basel’s Chloé Merz-Salyer was named Newcomer of the Year.

Christian Gentemann’s opulent, yet experimental Bar am Steinplatz successfully defended its title as Hotel Bar of the Year, setting the scene for a possible hat trick at next year’s awards. If anyone can pull off a feat like that, it’s Gentemann.

But the most emotional moment of the evening was the presentation of the Special Award for Lifetime Achievement to veteran Swiss bartender Peter Roth. The Zurich-based bartender is recently retired, but his career spans more than 40 years behind different bars, over 30 of which he spent as bar manager at the famous Kronenhalle Bar. Visibly moved, Roth, accompanied by his successor, Christian Heiss, accepted the award with humility. It’s an honor which is not awarded each year, and is only given out on the special initiative of the jury.

On behalf of the entire MIXOLOGY editorial team, a big congratulations to the winners of the MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS 2018. We hope to see them all again tomorrow at Bar Convent Berlin!
