Inventory for December 7th, 2014

Happy second Advent! This week’s inventory deals with a pair of Tennessee brothers who’ve revived their ancestor’s fallen whiskey empire, an Art Basel collaboration between Jon Buscemi and Hennessy, Elite Traveler’s world’s top ten cocktails, a photographer examining scotch rests up close, and the 2015 Swiss Nightlife Awards.

This week marks the beginning of Christmas at our favorite Kreuzberg hangout: Markthalle Neun. Readings, baking and cooking lessons, arts and crafts for the small ones, caroling, and a Glühwein that’s sure to make your hair stand on end, in the best possible way of course. Have a look here, it’s sure to be a festive time.

1) Tennessee Brothers Seek to Revive Fallen Whiskey Empire
A story that sounds almost too good to be true: Eight years ago brothers Charlie and Andie Nelson drive through the Tennessee countryside only to discover a derelict whiskey distillery. Intrigued, they go closer only to see their surname “Nelson” on the historical marker.
At the time the two college grads were searching for something, what they didn’t know, so they decided to revive the old family business.
Their parents put up everything they owned in loans and four years later the distillery broke even. Up until recently the two brothers produced their bourbon Belle Meade in conjunction with MGP, a large national distiller, but they opened their own 30,000 sq ft production facility this fall and now offer tours and tastings.
2) Jon Buscemi and Hennessy Collaborate
Every December Miami plays host to Art Basel. This year “European heritage meets American ambition” in the decanted gallery as Hennessy V.S.O.P. and Jon Buscemi showcase their collaboration which consists of a line of high-top sneakers, tote bags, coasters, hats, bottle porters, and a leather cinch bag.

Forbes Life calls this “two icons reinterpreting the art of luxury”. Craftsmanship, which stands at the core of each brand’s mission statement, and Jon Buscemi’s decade-long consumption of Hennessy led these two towards each other.

3) Elite Traveler’s World’s Top Ten Best Cocktails
Elite Traveler has compiled a list of their “10 Most Amazing Cocktails in the World” and we thought we’d investigate. To no one’s surprise The Artesian’s “Forever Young” makes an appearance quite quickly. The cocktail is served in a metal vessel, hidden behind a mirror and scented by opium incense.
Every gin lover’s heart will start beating faster at the mention of Gin Palace’s “White Negroni” which, lighter than a classic Negroni, is made up of bianco vermouth, Salers aperitif, and Perry’s Tot gin. A feast for all the senses the Living Room at W South Beach Hotel & Residences serves a stunning, edible flower topped “Paloma Hermosa” which is a concoction of Tapatio Blanco tequila and St. Germain Elderflower liqueur, fresh grapefruit, lime, agave, and egg whites.
4) Macro Photography of Single Malt Whiskey
Photographer Ernie Button was putting the dishes away when he noticed a film on the bottom of his Scotch glass that intrigued him. You can see some of the work over at boingboing where the photographer explains that when some Scotch is left in the glass the alcohol dries up and what remains variously-patterned sediments.
A macro lens will capture those quite beautifully, especially when using different coloured lights, as Button does. See more of his work here.

5) Swiss Nightlife Award
Last week the organizers of the Swiss Nightlife Award announced all nominees for the fifth awards. The winners of the 12 categories will be announced in February 2015. Nominees include Clubs Bierhübeli in Bern and Vior in Zürich, both up for Best Club.
Winners will be determined via voting, 50% of those votes stem from the public while the other half is determined by the Swiss Nightlife Award Academy which is made up 20 industry professionals.
