Inventory for October 4th, 2015

This is it! The last inventory before next week’s BCB begins with a bang (truth be told, several events are already taking place today). Before we fully dedicate ourselves to the bar week, let’s have a look at the news. German Markus Weller takes home first place in Spain, Disaronno has chosen to wear Cavalli this fall, Absolut releases its annual limited edition, a sommelier explains the key words to look for on wine bottles, Kate Hudson poses for Campari, and an Australian company releases a vodka infused with vitamins.

Yes, we’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. We are so excited for this year’s, the ninth!, edition of the Bar Convent Berlin. Besides the actual event, on October 6th and 7th,  many good events are happening around it. Thankfully, Nomy Blog has listed the top 11. Have a look here to see what else is going on, and join us for a drink at all and any!

1) Leipziger Markus Weller wins Primero del Carlos I Colegio del Brandy & Competition

Monday, the 28th of September, saw German bartender Markus Weller take home the first prize at the Primero del Carlos I Colegio del Brandy & Competition. The competition took place in the brandy’s Andalusian hometown of El Puerto de Santa Maria. His “The Kings Nightcap” cocktail managed to convince the jury through its balance and characteristic notes of vanilla, nutmeg, and hint of sweetness. The Leipzig-based bartender won out against 29 other barkeepers.

2) Disaronno wears Cavalli

It’s that time of year again. Fashion meets liquor. When last seen, Disaronno’s limited edition bottles wore Versace. This time around, the bottle will be wearing typical Cavalli designs. Inspired by Robert Cavalli’s Spring/Summer 2015 pre-collection, a colorful animal print decorates the bottle. Even if the content doesn’t change, it’s nice to pep up your backboard with some fun designs. Sales of the limited edition go in support of the charity Fashion 4 Development.

3) Absolut Vodka’s Annual Limited Edition Announced

Like every year, Absolut Vodka announced its annual limited edition on October 1st. The new bottle’s goal was designed under the principle, of shining a new light on nightlife through the use of technology and creativity. Only 110,000 bottles will be available. Fittingly, Absolut has released a new drink to accompany their ‘electric’ new bottle. Werner Grub, experimental physicist and member of the Science Busters, consulted with Absolut on the creation of the “Absolut Ampere”. Garnished with copper and aluminium, the lemon is meant to really drive home the electric point.

4) How to Wine

Sometimes, it’s hard picking a good bottle of vino that won’t cost the world. Business Insider has compiled a list of “key words” to look for on good bottles of wine, all under $25. Owner of the The Sommelier Company Jörn Kleinhans spoke to the website and shared his knowledge. He gives words for specific wines, for example on a bottle of Bordeaux, always look for the ‘Cru Bourgeois’ distinction, which refers to the region where the wines are produced.

On Italian wines like Barolo or Chianti look for ‘Riserva’, which means that the wines have been additionally aged in a cellar before their release. “This term indicates the winery has full confidence this wine has high potential and shows their best quality”. Find the complete list of important wine words here.

5) Kate Hudson for Campari

Does that mean we can now call her Cate? Actresses have long graced Campari ads, most recently Eva Green got to throw on a red dress and prance around a haunted mansion. This time around, Cate (yes, we’re turning it into a thing) is chauffeured to and from movie sets and gets to fly in private planes, all while dressed in Campari cardinal red (somebody stop us) and sipping on, what one can only imagine to be, a Negroni.

6) Australia’s Vitamin Alcohol Company to release Vitamin Infused Vodka

Why, oh why do liquor companies insist on doing this? Liquor.com reports that the Australian Vitamin Alcohol Company is ready to launch its Vitamin Vodka. Made from organic Australian sugar cane and water from Hunter Valley, the vodka is scheduled for its European release in October. There seems to be no valuable explanation of why the world needs this, but hey – at least the bottle cashes in at a sweet $1,600 USD. Easy.
