Last week the German winner for Nikka’s Perfect Serve 2016 competition was announced in Hamburg. The 22-year old Jumpei Yamamoto hails from Berlin’s Salut bar and was able to convince the trio of judges (Charles Schumann, Jörg Meyer, and our very own Nils Wrage) with his fantastic instinct for the right right, excellent service, and his spot-on drink composition. As the German winner, Jumpei Yamamoto will travel to Rome to test his skills against international competitors. The global winner of the Nikka Perfect Serve 2016 will receive a one-week trip to Japan. Good luck to you, Jumpei!

Anti-Trump Mezcal Pop-Up Coming to Adams Morgan

We’ve been following the US election with shock and horror, never has living on ‘ye olde Continent seem like a better choice than now. But, fingers crossed, things will be over soon. Until then, two bars have popped up that have devoted itself to the Republican nominee Donald Trump. Barrel “has converted its basement den into a Trump-themed bar with gigantic menus that make your hands look small and several cardboard cutouts of the candidate”. Fantastic. Next up, we’ve got Lukas Smith and Steve Laycock who are opening a “mezcal-centered anti-Trump pop-up”.

Hating on Trump while enjoying some fine, smoky mezcal? Sounds like our idea of a good time. The two are both brand ambassadors for Ilegal Mezcal and the company’s spent the past year campaigning against  Trump “selling T-shirts that say “Donald eres un pendejo” (Donald, you’re a dumbass) and putting up thousands of posters with that message—as well as “The only thing that should be Ilegal is mezcal”—in New York, California, and beyond”. The Illegal pop up will enjoy live music, a roster of East Coast bartenders and various mezcal drinks, as well as beer and Mexican food. “For election night, the bar will air the vote count live, and Smith is looking to get a cake in Trump’s likeness. “We’re going to ceremoniously cannibalize Mr. Trump,” he says”. Good men.
