Inventory for June 11th, 2017

Cheers to this week’s news! We’ve got the original finger-stirred Negroni for you, an Italian wine by-product that’s selling itself as “vegan leather,” Red Bull is apparently readying itself to enter the mixer market with “Organics by Red Bull”, and Pernod Ricard acquires Del Maguey Mezcal.

Interested in bubbly? Who isn’t? Franciacorta is often described as the Champagne of Italy. On June 26th, you’ll have the chance to see how the Italian bubbly compares to the French one at Munich’s first Franciacorta Tasting. Thirty-five winemakers are set to present their wines at what will be the first ever German tasting event. This should be fun. Tickets and more information here.

The Original Finger-stirred Negroni

Most of you will know the story: Gaz Regan once had to stir Negronis for 20 people, and to speed things up, he used his finger instead of a stirrer. This story is bartending legend – a legend that Cocktail Kingdom has decided to monetize. The New York Times reports that the bar tool company has started selling a “a 13¾-inch stainless-steel bar spoon made with a cast of Mr. Regan’s index finger at one end and his rooster logo on the other.” A gimmick, for sure, but also one that’s so deeply embedded in cocktail culture, it just might work. Currently available only in the US, the bar spoon retails for $26.99.

Italian Designer creates “Vegan Leather” from Wine By-products

“An Italian designer has combined the worlds of high fashion and wine with a love of the planet, creating a vegan-friendly ‘leather’ made from the by-products of winemaking,” so the Drinks Business reports. Over the last couple of years ‘upcycling’ has become more and more of a thing and it’s hitting the world of wine and spirits. The vegan leather is known as Wineleather, and is produced by the leftover solids that remain after making wine: fruit skins, pulp, seeds, and stems after pressing. “Vegea was founded in January 2016 by Gianpiero Tessitore, an architect based in Milan. In 2014, he began researching the potential of a vegan ‘leather’ made from the by-products of winemaking, calling on the help of specialist researchers to determine the physical and mechanical properties of various plant fibers, and their ability to be transformed into eco-friendly materials.” The process was patented in 2016.

Organics by Red Bull to enter Germany’s Mixer Market

Organics by Red Bull is set to launch in Germany in June or July. The series range Organics by Red Bull will include Ginger Ale, Tonic Water, and Bitter Lemon, alongside the existing Red Bull Cola. Red Bull hasn’t made a statement in regards to this news of launch of Organics by Red Bill, however the newspaper Kurier reports that the Internet domains organicsbyredbull.com, as well as .at and .de, have been registered by the HQ in Fuschl. It remains to be seen how this plays out in the coming weeks.

Pernord Ricards buys Del Maguey Mezcal

Del Maguey, one of the first internationally marketed mezcals, is being acquired by Pernod Ricard SA. “Confirming an earlier Bloomberg story, Paris-based Pernod Ricard said Wednesday that it was buying a majority stake in the brand, which bottles high-end, small-batch mezcals from the state of Oaxaca.” Del Maguey is one of the category’s largest brands, boasting $3 million worth of sales in 2015. The sale only re-affirms mezcal’s popularity. Del Maguey’s current management team, including artist and mezcal evangelist Ron Cooper, will remain in place, Pernod Ricard has said. One can only hope that Pernod Ricard will do its part to help sustain the mezcal farming communities, instead of tearing them apart, which is a major concern for many involved in this booming industry.
