MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS 2017: THE LONG LIST NOMINEES
This year, the MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS will be awarded for the tenth time on October 10th in what we believe will be a brilliant gala and anniversary night. Previously kept under wraps, we’re very excited to finally release the unanimous nominees of the Long List, as voted by the advisory council and confirmed by the jury. Without further ado, please find the nominees from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the new European categories below.
We’ll be honoring the best and most striking characters at the MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS 2017 on October 10th 2016. For the first time ever, the gala event will take place at Berlin’s Maritim Hotel. In more news: the 16 award categories won’t just be considering German-speaking countries this year. We’ve included four additional categories that cover all of Europe. These are: “Best European Bar”, “Best New European Bar”, “Best European Mixologist”, and “Best European Spirit/Bar Product of the Year”. The deep black, crystal trophies that crown each category were made specially for our awards by the Bavarian Zwiesel Kristallglas AG.
There are two different councils processing the Long List nominations: One with more than 300 people from Germany, Switzerland & Austria who determine the Long List nominees for the 12 awards honoring the GSA-community. The European council consists of more than 120 members from all over Europe. Their votings culminate in the Long Lists for the four European categories.
Generally speaking the awards process is as follows: the winners are determined through a multi-part system. To start off, each jury council (which is made up of bartenders, specialized journalists from various print and online outlets, spirit industry representatives, and gastronomers) nominate their favorites within each category. The Long List is made up from this pool of candidates, which serves as the base for the next step: the Short List. Both juries (see below) pick the winners from the Short List. The winner in each category will be rightly celebrated on October 10th of this year, which so happens to be the eve of the Bar Convent Berlin (BCB).
This year’s GSA jury showcases nine different bar personalities. Some of them, Arnd Henning Heissen for example, remain in our collective memories as award winner from years past. The jury chairman is Erich Wassicek of Vienna’s Halbestadt Bar, who will be supported by Gerhard Kozbach-Tsai (Tür 7, Vienna) and regular MIXOLOGY contributor and bar expert Peter Eichhorn from Berlin. New jury members, who will be familiar to those in the industry, are Thomas Huhn (Les Trois Rois, Basel), Wolfgang Bogner (Tales Bar, Zurich), Torsten Spuhn (Modern Masters, Erfurt), Kent Steinbach (Mojito’s, Dusseldorf), Gabriel Daun (Gekkos Bar, Frankfurt), and Arnd Henning Heissen (Curtain Club & Fragrances, Berlin).
“After decades in this industry serving in this magnificent jury really makes me proud. The bar is the ulitmate theater in the world of hospitality. It’s an honour for me to help choosing a new spirit or bar product that may serve as a canvas for new creations. And to name the best artists and places who make a difference in pushing the boundaries of our trade.“ – Salvatore Calabrese (United Kingdom, Salvatore at Maison Eight)
The European Jury is made up of these fine folk: Salvatore Calabrese (Head of Jury – United Kingdom, Salvatore at Maison Eight & Bound at The Cromwell), Arnd Henning Heissen (Germany, Fragrances & The Curtain Club at The Ritz-Carlton), Ben Belmans (Belgium, Bijou), Dimitar Kosev Dimitrov (Bulgaria, ByTheWay), Erich Wassicek (Austria, Halbestadt), Fernando Castellon (France, Castellon Consulting), Juan Valls (Spain, Fibar & El Niño Perdido), Kirsten Holm (Denmark, K-Bar), Luboš Racz (Slovakia, Barkultur), Martin Kraut (Czech Republic, Barlife, Magazine & Prague Barshow), Patrick Pistolesi (Italy, Caffé Propaganda), Thanos Prunarus (Greece, Baba Au Rum & Fine Magazine), Thomas Huhn (Switzerland, Les Trois Rois), Timo Janse (The Netherlands, Perfect Serve Barshow & Door 74), Tomek Roehr (Poland, Wieczorny & Bar Symposium) and Vladimir Zhuravlev (Russia, Clabaratory).
The bar scene has determined its ten nominees per 16 categories. We’re so happy to finally announce their names and wish all of the candidates the best of luck!
