Inventory for January 24th, 2016

Line up the bottles and count ‘em all because today is inventory time! We were very excited to read about A Bar Above’s inaugural online bartender conference last week, North Korea claims to have invented a hangover-free alcohol (we wish!), Coca Cola Life now has less sugar but more Stevia, and Santa fulfilled one of our Christmas wishes late: 50 Cent’s name is finally on a vodka bottle. Cheers!

We all try and incorporate a little more alcohol in our lives on a daily basis, right? For those of you not on the Dryuary bandwagon, this month might just be the time to try out a whole host of boozy desserts. Food52 has got just what you need, a complete list of delicious, liquored up sweets: from beer floats to the perfect fruit flambé, everything you need at your fingertips. We’re particularly fond of the Tres Leches cake with just a splash of rum. What could be better on a dark Sunday night?

1) New Online Craft Bartender Conference

Last week the bar and mixology training company A Bar Above announced the inaugural Craft Bartender Summit, which will be held online. The summit will take place on April 17th, 2016 and “is poised to reach the tens of thousands of hospitality professionals who can’t otherwise attend industry conferences due to budget and travel constraints”. Of course, travel costs can feel like an insurmountable hurdle for the lone bartender, seeking to learn new skills, and a internet conference is most certainly the best solution!

On the day of the event, seminars will be screened on the web alongside a chat window. Attendees can watch from anywhere, and ask questions to the presenter in the live chat. Free replays will be available for those unable to join “live”. Presentations will focus on the skills and challenges that craft bartenders face behind the bar, including topics like craft bar techniques, business skills, product knowledge, and careers beyond the bar. The final programme with seminar topics and speakers will be announced in the coming weeks. Best of all? Registration is free and open to all bartenders and beverage industry professionals. 2) North Korea Claims to Invent Hangover-free Alcohol

Granted, this news comes to us courtesy of The Telegraph, so take it with a grain of salt. Every couple of months some company proclaims to have either invented a spirit that will no longer cause a hangover or some miracle cure that’ll immediately zap away any alcohol-induced ailments. Shockingly, most of them are scams. To be fair, even The Telegraph doesn’t really buy into this bizarre announced seeing as the country has “already claimed to have cured cancer, Aids and Ebola with a miracle drug produced from ginseng root”. The state-controlled newspaper Pyongyang Times reports that instead of sugar, the recipe includes burnt rice, which “supposedly eliminates the liquor’s bitter taste along with any risks of a hangover”.

Uh-hu, sure. Tasting notes you wonder? “Suave”. Well, if that description doesn’t pack a punch then I don’t know what. I’m assuming they wanted to evoke the image of a Don Draper type enjoying the drink (sans hangover, of course). “Koryo Liquor, which is made of six-year-old Kaesong Koryo insam, known as being highest in medicinal effect, and the scorched rice, is highly appreciated by experts and lovers as it is suave and causes no hangover. The Korean Central News Agency also referred to the drink as ‘the elixir of life’.”

3) More Stevia in Coca Cola Life – HELL YEAH

The headline should probably focus on the fact that Coca Cola Life now has less sugar, and not more stevia but hey – we’re rule breakers right? About Drinks notes that because of the additional Stevia, Coca Cola Life (whatta’ name) now has 50% less sugar and calories than regular sodas. I guess that’s a win? Look forward to a whole marketing campaign that will be rolled out in celebration of this news. Perhaps a young waife will kick a bucket of sugar to the side while happily sipping on her Coca Cola Life?

4) 50 Cent is Truly “Up in da Club” Now

Somebody got himself his own personal vodka brand, whuuu?! That’s right, your favorite rapper 50 is in cahoots with Effen Vodka. The Spirits Business reports that “Effen Vodka has worked with brand partner and rapper 50 Cent to launch a limited edition American football bottle to attract new consumers to the brand”.

That’s right, when I think football, I do think of 50 Cent! The bottle is wrapped with something that’s meant simultaneously remind the reader of both football skin and a jersey and is “finished with 50 Cent’s golden stamp of approval – his signature and logo”. Need we say more? If 50 Cent approves, what else is there to dispute?
