Inventory for December 13th, 2015

Welcome back folks! This week we take a look at Distill Ventures investing in Danish whisky, Bompas & Parr are hosting a workshop to produce bitters made with real human tears, and Edinburgh Gin releases new products.

In the spirit of holidays and sharing, this month’s Food Entrepreneurs Club will share some fails with the public. On December 15th FEC will speak to restaurateurs and food business owners to discuss their biggest fails and mistakes they made while getting their business started. An evening spent discussing what happens, when you fall on your face and how to get back up. This will be interesting for sure. More info here.

1) Distill Ventures buys Stake in Danish Distillery

Drinks giant Distill Ventures has acquired a minority stake in the Stauning Whisky distillery, so The Spirits Business reports. The Danish distillery plans on using the money to build a new distillery in order to increase the capacity by 50. The nine founders will continue to remain in control of the independent business. One of Stauning’s founders Alex Højrup says: “It is only 10 years ago that we started doing the first experiments with quality Danish whisky at Stauning. And now we suddenly get the opportunity to tell our story worldwide and let more people taste our unique whisky. We are obviously incredibly proud of the confidence that this investment shows in us and our whisky.” Work on the new distillery is said to begin in the summer of 2016. In other news, Distill Ventures revealed its plans to launch in North America to TSB.

2) Bitters made with Human Tears

How bitter do your tears taste? Well, let’s find out! On December 15th the drink alchemists Bompas & Parr are hosting a workshop in London where guests are invited to make cocktail bitters from their own tears. Held at the British Museum of Food Mashable.com reports that the museum will e filled with candles and classic music to “help bring on the tears”. And if that doesn’t work, there’s a strong-smelling menthol on hand. After the tears have rolled, guests can choose a combination of herbs and spiced to add a unique flavor to their tears. The mixture is then infused with neutral-tasting alcohol.

A Bompas & Parr spokesperson to Mashable:  “There are stories from the American Civil War where women were said to have cried into bottles and saved them for when their husbands come home. It has a sort of magic about it, saving these emotions”. Yup, color is very intrigued.

3) Edinburgh Gin’s New Products

Edinburgh Gin is set to release a limited edition of only 500 bottles just in time for Christmas. The botanicals are meant to remind the drinker of the story of the three kings and was first released to taste-enthusiastic gin drinkers and this year’s Bar Convent Berlin. Its second release is the Edinburgh Cannonball Gin, a Navy Strength style gin that boasts with 57,2% alcohol.

Edinburgh’s navy is one of the city’s landmarks, so it only makes sense that the gin embodies it through its heritage, ingredients, and design. Both bottles are available in Edinburgh’s new, sleeker bottle design.
